Catania is an original character created for The Shannara Chronicles. She was the friend and handmaiden of the Elven princess Amberle Elessedil, though her role was closer to that of a lady-in-waiting.

Biography

Along with Amberle's uncle Ander Elessedil, Catania was one of the only people to know of and support Amberle's plans to run the Gauntlet in the hopes of becoming a member of the Chosen. Catania was dating a member of the Chosen named Jase, and she was devastated when he and the rest of the Chosen except for Amberle were killed by the Changeling.

Later in Arborlon, Catania accidentally ran into Bandon, causing Bandon to have a vision of her death. Acting on his vision, Bandon managed to save Catania from being stabbed by the Changeling. After this incident, a romantic bond began to form between the two Elves.

When the Druid Allanon began training Bandon in the use of magic, the Dagda Mor took notice and seized Bandon's mind, locking it away from Allanon's reach and incapacitating the boy. Both Allanon and Catania were watching over the unconscious Bandon when the Dagda Mor used Bandon to grab Allanon and put the Druid's mind under his control as well. Under the Demon's influence, Allanon began choking Catania, but the Druid was able to free his mind and stop himself just after Arion Elessedil appeared.

Arion, who had already been suspicious of the Druid, was convinced by this display that the Druid must be taken out He asked a frightened Catania to help him find the Warlock Sword, because Catania was knowledgeable about the tunnels and passageways under the Elven palace where the sword was thought to be kept. Together they found the sword in little time, and Arion later ran the Druid through with the sword, apparently killing him.

Later, during a confrontation between the Dagda Mor, Arion, and Ander Elessedil, a fully healed Allanon managed to free Bandon from his mental imprisonment. He told Bandon that he wanted to train him to become the next Druid, the same way he was trained after his own parents abandoned him. Bandon refused, but Allanon insisted that under the current Demon onslaught, he didn't have the choice to refuse anymore.

As Allanon began teaching Bandon to harness his magic properly, the Elf became resentful of the Druid's harsh training and preoccupied with the feeling that he was only being valued for and defined by his magic. It soon became apparent that the Dagda Mor's hold on Bandon's mind had not been completely undone: When Bandon and Catania were alone together, he confessed to her that he still felt the Dagda Mor's presence, and Catania encouraged him to fight it. They kissed, but they began to get more intimate Bandon received a vision from the Dadga Mor that caused him to start strangling Catania. She managed to get away, and Allanon decided to hide her from Bandon for her own safety. Bandon was placed in prison.

Later, Catania visited Bandon and brought food to his prison cell in Arborlon. He convinced her to help him deceive a guard into unlocking his shackles, but after he was freed he flies into a rage when the guard manhandled Catania. To Catania's horror he didn't just incapacitate the guard; he brutally beat him to death. Bandon fled and was later seen carrying the Warlock Sword, standing at the magical henge where the Dagda Mor had once imprisoned his mind.

Catania was left to explain to Allanon what had happened. She told Allanon that she had failed Bandon, and the Druid commiserated with her, saying that he failed Bandon as well.

A year later, King Ander and the Elven nation were struggling. The effort to defeat the Dagda Mor had left the Elven treasury bankrupt and many families homeless. By this time Catania had given up on Bandon and was in a relationship with Ander, helping him assist the struggling Elves.

When Ander and Allanon traveled to Leah to meet with Queen Tamlin, Catania accompanied him. The Queen of Leah surprised Ander by proposing that any alliance between Leah and the Elves be cemented by blood, through a marriage between Ander and Tamlin's daughter Lyria.

At night in their rooms in Leah, Ander spoke to Catania and said he would refuse to accept Tamlin's offer because of his love for Catania. However, Catania pointed out that it the alliance had to be formed the continued survival of the Elves, and that she and Ander needed to make sure that they gave their lives to making the world better, just as King Eventine, Arion, and Amberle had done.

During this discussion, Lyria entered Ander and Catania's quarters to alert them to Eretria's presence in the palace of Leah.

Ander and Catania found Eretria, and Ander informed the palace guards trying to imprison the Rover girl that she was under his protection. Eretria told the King that she had received a message from Amberle that Wil Ohmsford was in danger, prompting Ander to tell Eretria that Amberle had become the Ellcrys.

Allanon had hoped to spare Wil fom further conflict, but he said that if the Ellcrys was sending warning they all had to look for Wil. Allanon also said that Bandon was looking for Wil since Wil was the only person who could stop the Warlock Lord, causing Catania to inquire after Bandon.

Allanon promised to explain later but insisted that Ander, Eretria, Catania, and the rest of the Elven delegation to Leah had to leave to find Wil in Shady Vale. The Druid had made his way to the stables of the palace when General Riga confronted Allanon and knocked him out. Eretria and Catania, who were in the stable at the time, watched as Riga ordered his men to take Allanon to Graymark.

Catania told Eretria that she didn't knwo where Graymark was, but that the men who had captured Allanon were part of the Crimson. Eretria urged Catania to find Ander and tell him he must send out a patrol to bring back Allanon. In the meantime, the Rover girl would leave to find Wil before Bandon did.

Catania ran back to her quarters in Leah to find Ander, only to find Edain there. Edain said that Ander was meeting with Queen Tamlin to finalize the alliance.

Catania urged Edain to go find Ander and stop the meeting, saying that Allanon had to have been set up since the Crimson was waiting for him at stables. Edain grabbed Catania, preventing her from running away, and asked her who else knew about what had happened. Catania barely had time to register her confusion at Edain's behavior before the man viciously stabbed her to death.
