The Sphinxes reside in the Hall of Kings, near Paranor. Sphinxes use telepathy to lure a passer to look at them. Anyone who looks at a Sphinx is turned to stone instantly. The only people known who have been able to get past the Sphinxes are Allanon, Shea Ohmsford, Flick Ohmsford, Balinor Buckhannah, Menion Leah, Hendel, Durin Elessedil, and Dayel Elessedil in The Sword of Shannara, and Walker Boh in The Scions of Shannara.
